The true meaning of boxing day

The true meaning of boxing day

What is the true meaning of boxing day and why is it called Boxing day?

Early this morning, I was sharing a joke or rather a scene I witnessed on Christmas day. While everyone was busy preparing tasty dishes for their family, a certain couple was entertaining the neighborhood with their endless fights.
I joked with the hubstar about  how the couple should have saved it for 26th of December which is the real “boxing day”
Hmmm, I even went on to explain to my four years old son that it’s “boxing day”. According to my explanation, it was a day for boxing as a sport.

While I was blabbing, the hubstar over -heard and was kind enough to tutor both I and my son. He told us Boxing Day had nothing to do with Boxing as a sport but rather gift boxes. At this point, I should have eggs on my face, right? Na lie joor. I still no gree say I no sabi am. Na only google fit settle this matter. Between you and me, let me just confess now,  I no Know am and I’m sure some of you are like me.

What Then Is Boxing Day?

Don’t ever think that this is what boxing day is about cos it’s not.

Arguments abound on the origins of the name Boxing Day but they all seem to agree that it is a day for ‘gift boxes’ to move from the ‘privileged to the “very privileged’ (I prefer not to refer to anyone as ‘less privileged’) as opposed to my earlier belief of Boxing Day as a sport.

One school of thought believes that the name is a reference to holiday gifts. A ‘Christmas Box’ in Britain is a name for a Christmas present. Boxing Day was traditionally a day off for servants and the day when they received a ‘Christmas Box’ from the master. The servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give ‘Christmas Boxes’ to their families.

Another school of thought believes the name is a reference to charity initiatives. A box to collect money for the poor traditionally are placed in Churches on Christmas day and opened the next day – Boxing Day.

This is the real Boxing Day.

In summary, Boxing Day is celebrated on December 26, as a
holiday in many countries, especially those of the
Commonwealth. This day is called Boxing Day
because it is during this time that the wealthy
people would distribute gifts to their helpers and to
the poor. Some countries that celebrate Boxing Day
as holiday include United Kingdom, Canada,
Australia and the Islands of the Caribbean.

And it’s a win for the hubstar
